Lake Tahoe & Truckee

Blue water and granite in the high Sierra.

Lake Tahoe sits at 6,225 feet, 22 miles long and so clear you can see 60 feet down. Land at Truckee Tahoe, a busy mountain airport 20 minutes from the north shore, stay in Truckee’s old railroad downtown or at a lakeside resort in Incline Village, swim at Sand Harbor on the Nevada side, drive the west shore to Emerald Bay and eat on the pier at Gar Woods.

01 / Aviation & getting around

A high Sierra airport.

KTRK, Truckee Tahoe, is a part-time towered field at 5,904 feet with a 7,001-foot main runway, about 20 minutes from the north shore of the lake.

Summer afternoon density altitude frequently exceeds 9,000 feet. Mountainous terrain surrounds the field; expect windshear and downdrafts. Noise-abatement rules and a voluntary 10 p.m.–7 a.m. curfew apply; gliders operate May–September. No de-icing. (FAA chart supplement remarks.) No live fuel price is shown.

Sierra Nevada flying: summer density altitude above 9,000 feet in the afternoon at Truckee, mountain wave and windshear, wildfire smoke some summers, and heavy winter snow and icing. Consider a mountain-flying course before you go. About 2000 nm from Myrtle Beach: two long days each way with several fuel stops. Plan a week, or overnight on the way out and back.
