White Sands & Cloudcroft

White dunes and a lodge in the clouds.

White Sands National Park is the world’s largest gypsum dune field, 275 square miles of brilliant white sand that stays cool underfoot even in summer. Land at Alamogordo–White Sands Regional, sled the dunes and stay for sunset, visit the New Mexico Museum of Space History, then drive 20 miles up the mountain to Cloudcroft, where the 1899 Lodge Resort sits at nearly 9,000 feet in the pines.

Military, glider, ultralight and drone activity on and near the airport. Restricted airspace over White Sands Missile Range and Holloman AFB surrounds the area; brief it carefully. The park and its road close occasionally for missile tests. No live fuel price is shown.

High desert flying: high density altitude in summer, strong gusty spring winds and mountain wave, afternoon monsoon storms from July to September, winter snow, and long distances between airports. About 1360 nm from Myrtle Beach: two long days each way with several fuel stops. Plan a week, or overnight on the way out and back.
